For firewall technology we have selected an application proxy firewall, Secure Computing’s “Sidewinder G2”. This system provided the greatest level of security with ease of management. Don’t misunderstand the difference between ease of management and understanding the system and its capabilities. This is not a product that should be installed and configured by the typical system administrator. Out of the box, this product will shut down your internal network (this is a good thing). The G2 doesn’t rely upon the administrator to know what port to shut down as it shuts off everything. It is the administrators’ job to open up only ports and services that satisfy a business need.
For organizations with relaxed security requirements, a packet filtering firewall will work fine. There are a host of them on the market and we don’t support them. We chose to support the Sidewinder G2 product for one reason - it’s secure.
